Historical Background of the Kigali Genocide Memorial
Following the genocide, Kigali needed a dignified place to bury victims whose remains had been recovered from different parts of the city. Gisozi was chosen as a burial site, and the Kigali Genocide Memorial was officially inaugurated in 2004.
Today the memorial has three main functions: to commemorate the victims, to educate people about the causes and consequences of genocide and to prevent future atrocities by raising awareness and providing education.
The Kigali Genocide Memorial is also one of four sites included in the UNESCO World Heritage property Memorial Sites of the Genocide: Nyamata, Murambi, Gisozi and Bisesero, inscribed in 2023.
